Growing the next generation of plants for the Monaro and beyond
Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare is establishing a growers network of local volunteers to grow native plants at their own home. Landcare will provide the training and resources to grow the plants. Growers will be part of a supported network, led by our friendly local nursery manager.
You don't need to be an expert to join in, just a passion for growing and the commitment for caring for plants until they reach planting age. You don’t need a rural property to participate either, activities will fit on an urban and village block. Details about being a grower can be found in the adjacent document. If you are interested in hearing more about the project contact Georgeanna on upper.murrumbidgee@gmail.com.
Upper Murrumbidgee is working with Upper Snowy Landcare, South East Local Land Services and Department of Planning and Environment On the NSW Koala Strategy. As part of the project support for landholders to participate in koala surveys across the region, using acoustic recorders. If you would like to be part of the survey to see whether koalas are at your place, register your interest with Georgeanna Story at upper.murrumbidgee@gmail.com.
Riparian weed control
UMLC is supporting the Michelago and Smiths Road Landcare to deliver weed control along the upper Murrumbidgee River and Michelago Creek. The control will be completed in the 2024/25 growing season. If you border the river or creek and would like to know more contact us here.
Land For Wildlife (LFW) is a voluntary property registration scheme for landholders who wish to manage areas of wildlife habitat on their property. It is free and non-binding scheme that provides ecological advice for landholders to incorporate nature conservation into their other property management goals. Landcare can now provide FREE LFW property assessment on properties within the Snowy-Monaro council area.
You don’t need a huge property to make a difference. Half a hectare of native grassland or bush can still provide good habitat, even if it is also used for other productive uses, such as grazing. The first step is to contact us to set up a property visit.
A typical assessment takes about 2 hours and involves a walk or drive around the property to identify the main plant species and communities on-site and the animals likely to occur in the area. We can then discuss management concerns and your options for enhancing and connecting key biodiversity. Landholders receive welcome pack and LFW property sign, information on the flora and fauna species present, a report on ecological valuesof your property and information, contacts and invitations to events relevant to your conservation goals.
LFW landholders are also eligible for support funding of up to $6,000 over 3 years. See the following link for details: BCT Conservation Partners Grant

Upper Murrumbidgee and Upper Snowy Landcare are working together to provide a one stop shop for landholders to access information on biodiversity on the Monaro. The website is due for completion by the end of 2022.
A South East Local Land Services project that worked with numerous landholders across our region to protect, enhance and create woodland bird habitat.
Michelago Landcare and the local community have created woodland bird linkages across the Michelago valley. Over 3000 plants and 5km of fencing was installed with a focus on a shrubby understory and managing grazing. The project was funded through the NSW Environmental Trust.
Working together with the community for coordinated pest control is a continuing project for UMLC and it's Landcare groups. For several years Royalla Landcare have led rabbit control programs using biocontrol techniques. Numeralla Landcare coordinated a feral cat project to reduce post-bushfire predation and UMLC have worked with local contractors to control introduced species in key areas.
Numeralla Landcare, Upper Murrumbidgee Demonstration Reach and Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare worked together to improve fish habitat in the Numeralla River. Numeralla Landcare has a long history of caring for the river and this fish hotel builds on previous work.
